The Reflective Leader brings together theory and core concepts through reflective practice, reflexivity, and experiential learning to crystallize current thinking regarding introspection and contextual intelligence in understanding and improving the effectiveness of leaders.

Beginning with an understanding how leaders learn through reflection, researchers will be introduced to the philosophical and historical roots that underpin reflective learning. Chapters then examine the leadership journey, learning and un-learning through reflective practice, the reflexive practicum, practice and praxis, creativity and reflection, and action learning and reflection.

Featuring interviews with a wide range of practitioners that present reflections on critical incidents and learning episodes, Robson provides a practical narrative to underpin theoretical discovery. “Reflexivity in practice” connects the experience of practitioners, synthesising theory, practice setting and personal experiential learning to support and inform researchers, students, and reflective professionals.

"In an environment where everyone is claiming to have the “magic pill” for effective leadership, this book presents an innovative approach that speaks for itself. A deeply thoughtful lens on traditional content, Ian Robson equips readers with a personalised and pragmatic reflexive approach that simplifies a rather dense body of research and enables managers in any field to enrich their leadership skills. As dynamic as it is telling, the author integrates theory, assessment tools and superb practical examples in a way that encourages both introspection and incremental development. An excellent reflection on reflection in reflection."

- Dr Trevor Morrow, Director of International, University of Aberdeen Business School.

"Ian Robson has produced an intelligent, timely and readable plea for leaders to engage in reflective behaviour in their practice with a well-argued and evidenced text, made live through some excellent case studies. So far so good. However, what makes this book really compelling for me is the challenge to leaders to go beyond reflection and to engage with reflexivity. Thus, reflexive leaders are required to open their minds to reveal the deeper values, beliefs and associated biases that directly affect the way they see the world, what they see, how they make sense of what they see. In doing so, they are more likely to make wise decisions that produce sustainable rather than short-term (re)solutions. With this end in mind, his book is essential reading for leaders at any stage in their career who seek to improve their practice and the impact they have on people and organsaitions."
