Emerald Bookstore endeavours to conform to level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Web Accessibility Initiative Accessible Rich Internet Applications Suite (WAI-ARIA) 1.1 and Section 508 Standards of the U.S. Federal Accessibility Standard. These guidelines detail how to make content accessible to a wide range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity and combinations of these.

Embedding accessibility: Emerald’s approach

Emerald aims to ensure that accessibility is at the heart of our platforms, by subscribing to five core principles:

Development

All features and functionality on the Emerald Bookstore have been created in line with WCAG 2.1 and WAI-ARIA 1.1 guidelines. These are based on relevant international accessibility guidelines.

Testing

All features and functionality on the Emerald Bookstore are tested by our internal testing team before being deployed on the live site. Automated and manual testing is conducted to ensure new features and functionality conform to accessibility guidelines.

Review

An accessibility audit of Emerald Bookstore is conducted periodically to ensure it conforms to international accessibility guidelines. Any issues discovered are assessed and prioritised accordingly in our accessibility roadmap.

Feedback

Feedback is welcomed from users to notify us of any accessibility bugs they find or any aspects of the site that they found particularly useful. Your feedback will help us improve Emerald Bookstore. Please contact us on [email protected]. For more contact options please see our "Contact us" section for different ways to send us feedback.

Transparency

We aim to be open and honest about what is not working well on our platforms and what needs to be improved. We aim to resolve known issues as quickly as possible.

Emerald Insight’s voluntary product accessibility template (VPAT)

A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is a technical document which evaluates how accessible a platform is according to recognised accessibility guidelines. For a copy of Emerald Bookstore’s latest VPAT please contact: [email protected].

Alternative book content

Our platform currently offers most book content in EPub, HTML and PDF formats. However, Emerald Publishing is committed to ensuring that our content reaches as wide an audience as possible. Wherever possible we will endeavour to provide alternative electronic copies of content to those unable to read traditional print books because of visual impairment, physical disability or severe learning disability. If you are in the US or Canada, the AccessText Network service is currently being reviewed. For all accessibility requests, please complete this form. We aim to fulfil requests within 5 working days.
