Women leaders in many parts of the world have leadership opportunities that never existed before as a result of technology, globalization, and demographic shifts that have produced more female graduates than in the past and created a workforce which consists almost 50% of women. Ever more so, in today’s rapidly changing environment, the contexts in which women exercise leadership is critically important in shaping their leadership style. At the same time, objectifying women in contexts such as sports and the media or the patriarchal ideology that permeates contexts such as the military and the church have changed very little. This book, updated and expanded from the 2011 first edition, acknowledges and discusses the belief that the context in which women exercise leadership is critically important in shaping their leadership style.
Each chapter opens with a vignette of an extraordinary leader in the respective context, presents a contextual analysis, and discusses issues, controversies and paradoxes germane to the context of interest.     This book discusses women in leadership in various contexts: political systems, organizations, information technology, the media, sports, the military, religion and spirituality, science, higher education, and the arts, as well as global women leaders. The first two chapters address changing expectations of women leaders, the persistence of stereotypes, the gendered nature of organization, the importance of contexts and leaders’ ability to cross them, and the tension women leaders experience around the world, as well as the history of women’s achievements and competence as leaders from ancient civilizations through the 20th century. This edition has new vignettes of women leaders; an expanded section on objectification theory; new sections on women’s depiction in video games, women leaders in team sports, the gender pay gap in sports, political theory, net-centric warfare, the ordination of women, the canonization and critique of Mother Theresa, contemporary female religious leaders, and female political leaders in the Middle East; and other revisions in chapters.

    Dr. Karin Klenke, senior principal of the Leadership Development Institute, holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology and has served on the faculties of the University of Colorado, George Washington University, the University of Richmond, Regent University, Averett University, Old Dominion University, the University of Pretoria, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and The National Graduate School. She currently serves on the editorial boards of the following journals: Leadership published by Sage in the UK, Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion, an Academy of management journal, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Development, Journal of Mixed Methods, International Leadership Journal, The Qualitative Report and Organization Management Journal.
