This book provides an in depth survey of the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (I/O), a specialized field within the larger discipline of psychology also called Work and Organizational Psychology, Occupational Psychology, and Organizational Psychology. I/O is the scientific study of how individuals and groups behave in the performance of work activities and in the context of organizations.     This book surveys the field of industrial and organizational psychology and its research, theory, and applications, emphasizing the scientific nature of the field and illustrating its relevance to current events. It discusses the history and development of the field; research methods; organizational topics, including work motivation, attitudes, groups, social structure, social processes, leadership, and stress; and personnel topics, including work analysis, employee selection, training, and performance appraisal.

    Dr. Robert L. Dipboye received his Ph. D. from Purdue University. He has held faculty positions in several business schools and psychology departments, including Herbert S. Autrey Chair in Social Sciences at Rice University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Central Florida. He served on the editorial boards of several journals including the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and the Journal of Applied Psychology where he was Associate Editor. He is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the American Psychological Association. In addition, he has worked as a consultant with major corporations.
